THE BRONZE COT BY HARALD KASTLUNGER

25 November 2016 – 8 January 2017

Children, shepherds and kings, chickens, geese and sheep populate the private Christmas cot of the Donà family. Harald Kastlunger (*1937) from Bressanone created the imaginative bronze figures in 1991, who stand in wonder and awe before the Christmas miracle. The privately owned nativity scene is being exhibited for the second time this year.

IN DULCI JUBILO!

PAPER COTS FROM THE ENGELHARDT COLLECTION

25 November 2016 - 8 January 2017

"Kripperl-Doktor" he was called: Dr. med. Werner Engelhardt (1908-1979), a specialist surgeon in Munich. His passion were paper cots. Over decades he amassed a collection of more than 700 paper cots, which is now housed as a donation in the Hofburg Bressanone. The doctor's passion for collecting seemed to know no bounds. He collected hand-painted cots and cot figures as well as prints of various epochs from Europe and overseas. "Quality and kitsch are peacefully united", as the collector once judged himself.

The exhibition shows a colourful cross-section of the collection. Hand-painted unique pieces stand next to printed artists' nativity scenes, colourful pop-up nativity scenes and Advent calendars from the 1960s and 1970s. All nativity scenes have one thing in common: they bring the Christmas story into people's homes.

EDUARD THÖNY

19 March 2016 - 31 July 2016

Eduard Thöny (1866-1950) was a sketcher, caricaturist and painter. Born in Bressanone, Thöny grew up in Munich. He drew countless sheets with motifs from military, student and social life for the Munich magazine "Simplicissimus". The exhibition shows drawings for "Simplicissimus" and rare oil paintings by Eduard Thöny as well as little-known sculptures by his father Christian Thöni. A comprehensive catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition.

In addition to works by Eduard Thöny (1866-1950), the exhibition also features sculptures by his father Christian Thöni (1836-1902), which are on display in South Tyrol for the first time. Christian Thöni came from St. Valentin auf der Haide, was a wood sculptor, worked for a short time in Paris and in episcopal service in Bressanone. At the suggestion of his friend Franz Defregger, he moved to Munich with his family in 1873. Eduard Thöny remained in Bavaria and lived on the Ammersee. Nevertheless, the connection to his father's home in Vinschgau was never broken. This is documented both in the exhibition and in the catalogue.
